Elf pisze:As I've mentioned here before, I was allowed to listen to the album before I interviewed Jarre in Brussels. Unfortunately it was all in a rush, and a few days later my access to the album was revoked. But I heard enough of the album to find out that I really liked it, and could give Jarre some feedback (he said I was the first one who had heard it outside his circle who could give him feedback).
I was also asked not to talk too much about the album by Sony, so I held my tounge most of the time. I have been able to verify for people, both here and on Facebook, whether certain tracks that have appeared online have been from this album or not (like the DJ who included Oxygene 18 in his mix on Soundcloud).
Yesterday I was given a reviewer's copy of the album, and told I could talk freely about it. I've been listening to the album pretty much non stop all through last night and today. And people, this album is so freaking great that it makes up for Teo & Tea and... well.. anything I think of.
However, be warned: If Jarre playing with sounds, frequencies and sequences (think Arpegiator, Oxygene 11, Globetrotter, Oxygene 5, the trance track from Bourges and Variations III) and tracks in that vein is not your thing, it will probably disappoint you. There are no hints of Jarre trying to write hit singles like Chronologie 4, RV4, Oxygene 4 and 8 and so on here. Oxygene 17 is the most accessible track on this album. So if the melodic version of Jarre is your favourite version of him, this is not your lucky day.
Personally I love this album to bits. It's very different from all other Oxygene albums. It's like vintage Jarre met Jarre from the early 70s and they had an orgy with Tangerine Dream, 90s trance music and Brian Eno and produced a child.
Oxygene Part 14 and 15 sets the mood. There are no melody lines here, just playing along with sequencers and is Jarre warming up to Part 16.
Because Oxygene Part 16 is amazing. It's got a drive that's really infectious and lets you flow along. Kind of like a lot of synth artists tried to do as movie music, but only... you know.. good. There's even Commodore 64 SID sounds int it, for chrissakes!
Oxygene Part 17 is actually the odd one out, it really doesn't fit on the album. It's obvious it's supposed to be the hit single, but I don't think it has potential for that. It's nice enough, and it's the most Oxygene-like, with the crackle pops in the rhythm.
Oxygene Part 18 is a small minimalistic break, which is nice enough. If Eno did it, it would have been 10 minutes, and I kind of wish it was longer.
Oxygene 19 is the next master piece. There are hints of Les Granges Brulees in the lead synth, but the sequences with string sounds and is like taken out of a a song by any of the rave artists which ripped of Jarre in the 90s and 00s. With a little bit of remixing of certain sections, Jarre could have his club hit from this album.
When I interviewed Jarre in Brussels, this was the only track which I hadn't been able to listen to all the way through. He told me that the album ended with a scream going out into space. It's only now I understand what he meant.
The track starts a bit strange. There are some sound experiments going on, and suddenly Oxygene Part 6 appears. But when that fades, the track is pure orgasmic minimalistic bliss, worthy of Philip Glass. I went out walking tonight, with the album in my ears, and when this track was at it's most intense, I was in tears. It's that beautiful.
However, it's VERY ambient in it's build up, and very minimalistic and repetitive. This is not Oxygene 7 and 8-Jarre. It's experimental-and-I-don't-care-if-you-like-this-Jarre.
